SIAT Founded the First Residential College

On November 26th, the founding ceremony of Dawning College was held at the Mingzhu Campus, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology (tentative name, hereinafter referred to SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Dawning College, the first Residential College (RC) of SIAT, is headed by Guojie Li, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and founder of Dawning high-end computer, as Honorary College Master and Jianpin Fan, the academician of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, Director of SIAT Preparatory Office and President of SIAT, as Master of the College.

Dawning College is the first experimental RC established by SIAT in the fall semester of 2021 at Mingzhu Campus. The first batch of about 120 undergraduates and postgraduates receive the management and whole-person education of RC model. The number of students will gradually expand to 500. The College implements a “dual tutor system” to provide students with comprehensive and personalized tutorials in academic development, continuing education and employment, career plan, innovation and entrepreneurship, psychological support and pastoral care.

Embodying CAS Elements, Symbolizing “the Rising Sun”

The first RC is named “dawning” to demonstrate the significant scientific and technological achievements of Dawning high-end computer, suggesting that RC students will embrace a bright future of hope and potential like the rising sun under the “three-in-one” talent cultivation model of SIAT (namely integrating Faculties, Research Institutes and RCs) and thrive in the sea of knowledge.

Looking back on the development history of Dawning high-end computer, Guojie Li said:“Previously, China didn’t have any home-made products in this regard and was placed in the embargo list by some countries. Under such hard circumstances, we successfully developed the first domestic high performance computer system in a short span of 3 years, achieving a breakthrough in the production of high-end computers from scratch. Dawning people followed the spirit of ‘addressing national difficulties through science and research, and benefiting the public through innovation’. The motto of Dawning College is ‘Respect for courtesy and trustworthiness, seek truth and be pragmatic, knowledgeable and innovative, serve the country with science and technology’. We hope all students will cherish the Dawning spirit, honor the principles in their personal conducts and in academic pursuit.”

Jianpin Fan said, “Dawning 1” has grown from a research project into an important brand in China’s computer industry. The first RC of SIAT named after “dawning” demonstrates the significance of the major scientific and technological achievements of CAS to society. SIAT has a basis of 15-years-development in its research institutes, boasting various innovation carriers and incubation platforms, and is marching towards the goal of building a high-level research university from a high standing point. The SIAT motto of “bring together knowledge and practice and lead an upright life”aims at guiding students to take truth as the only criteria of testing practices and the two-sided mirror to tell right from wrong, to carry forward the Shenzhen spirit of endless innovation and to keep moving forward to become the pillars of China.

At the Ceremony, Jingyang Ren, the senior Vice President of Sugon Information Industry Co., LTD. signed a donation agreement with Jianpin Fan. SIAT plans to build 6 RCs to provide students with whole-person education with unique SIAT characteristics. The name of the colleges will integrate CAS spirit, Shenzhen spirit and CAS philosophy of education, showcasing the significant scientific achievements and symbolic achievements and spirits of CAS history.

“1+3” Endeavors Initiate Whole-person Education 2.0 Version in SIAT 

As a new research university, SIAT is actively building a “three-in-one” education model integrating faculties, research institutes and RCs with the aim of producing talents with “scientific literacy, management fundamentals and entrepreneurial genes”. Currently, preparatory work of SIAT are in steady progress. “1+3” endeavors, namely the founding ceremony of Dawning College, together with RC Education Seminars, New Era Engineering Education Workshop and Training Courses on Psychological Health, initiates the SIAT education work 2.0.
SIAT launched the “Residential College Education Seminars” to give training courses on theoretical basis, fundamental philosophies, core elements and practical methods of RC education and provide a platform of academic exchange and minds communication for those interested in RC education. Moreover, SIAT held the seminar with the theme of “Reflections and Challenges on Engineering Education in New Era”. Representatives from renowned enterprises, universities and experts in higher education were invited to explore the direction and feasible paths of engineering education in the new era. Besides exploring the essentials of education, SIAT attached great importance to students’ psychological health and set up a “SIAT Student Psychological Liaison Team” to improve the psychological health of students and promote their all-rounded development.
Representatives from Tsinghua University, Harbin Institute of Technology (Weihai), Southern University of Science and Technology, Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and other sister institutions were invited to attend the ceremony. The University of Hong Kong, University of Macau, Peking University, East China Normal University, Xi’an Jiaotong University and Hong Kong Baptist University (Zhuhai) expressed their blessings by presenting flower baskets and filming video messages.
More than 200 guests attended the event, including representatives of Shenzhen Education Bureau, Guangming District Education Bureau and sister institutions, deans of SIAT faculties, leaders of SIAT administrative departments and SIAT students and staff.
